Queen, assumed in to heaven!

Today we commemorate Mary’s assumption.

There are lots of reasons Mary was assumed to heaven. For example, Mary’s body wasn’t ‘allowed to see decay’ because it contained Christ, the source of all life…

My soul is filled with horror at the thought that this virginal flesh which had begotten God, had brought him into the world, had nourished and carried him, could have been turned into ashes or given over to be food for worms. St. Robert Bellarmine

Now, Mary may be assumed because of her close physical bond with Christ. But, she isn’t assumed because she is merely ‘sacred by association’,  a mere object, meaningless in her own right, but brought up to heaven as some museum piece accessory to Christ, who would seem to be the “main show.”

Mary’s assumption, the end of a life referred and consecrated to God: that of a woman fully human and fully free, was for victory’s sake and for love’s sake too.

It is important to remember that from the second century onwards the holy fathers have been talking of the Virgin Mary as the new Eve for the new Adam: not equal to him, of course, but closely joined with him in the battle against the enemy, which ended in the triumph over sin and death that had been promised even in Paradise. The glorious resurrection of Christ is essential to this victory and its final prize, but the blessed Virgin’s share in that fight must also have ended in the glorification of her body.

For as the Apostle says: When this mortal nature has put on immortality, then the scripture will be fulfilled that says “Death is swallowed up in victory”.

So, her assumption gives us hope, that when our souls become the temples of God, “our bodies too are raised up to share in the ecstasy of the blessed trinity” (Mark P. Shea, Mary Mother of the Son, Volume II, 184)

Mary’s victory, must be ours too, her assumption, both as a reward to her and a prophetic sign for us that no matter how much we smear the world with filth, blood and insanity, evil has neither the first or the last world. (Shea)

Thank you Mary! Thank you Jesus! We say in earnest, and with pleasure,

Hail, holy Queen, Mother of Mercy,
our life, our sweetness and our hope.
To thee do we cry, poor banished children of Eve;
to thee do we send up our sighs,
mourning and weeping in this valley of tears.

Turn then, most gracious advocate,
thine eyes of mercy toward us;
and after this our exile,
show unto us the blessed fruit of thy womb, Jesus.
O clement, O loving, O sweet Virgin Mary.

℣ Pray for us O holy Mother of God,
℟ that we may be made worthy of the promises of Christ.
