Conclave Timetable on Sydney (AEST) Times

Catholic News Service has both the timetable for the conclave, and the probable times we can expect to see the rather important black or white smoke.

I thought I’d translate it into AEST (i.e. Sydney time) if anyone is interested. 🙂

NB: All times are estimates, particularly the smokes. For example, the smoke for 5:00am Wednesday morning actually appeared at 5:40am but the smoke for 10pm appeared at 9:40am. Go figure.

Wednesday, 13th March (Yeah, nothing happens on the actual 12th for us…)

  • 1:45am — Transfer from the Domus Sanctae Marthae to the Apostolic Palace.
  • 2:30am — Procession from the Pauline Chapel to the Sistine Chapel.
  • 2:45am — Oaths, meditation by Cardinal Prosper Grech, first ballot.
  • 5:00am — Smoke signal expected. (appeared at 5:41am)
  • 5:15am — Vespers in the Sistine Chapel.
  • 5:30am — Transfer to the Domus Sanctae Marthae.
  • 6:00am — Dinner.
  • Cardinals are asleep; we are (hopefully) awake.
  • 4:30pm — Breakfast.
  • 5:45pm — Transfer to the Pauline Chapel.
  • 6:15pm — Mass in the Pauline Chapel.
  • 7:30pm — Prayer and two rounds of voting.
  • 8:30-9:00pm — Possible smoke signal. (First round.)
  • 10:00pm — Smoke signal expected. (Smoke at 9:38pm)
  • 10:30pm — Transfer to the Domus Sanctae Marthae.
  • 11:00pm — Lunch.

Thursday, 14th March

  • 2:00am — Transfer to the Apostolic Palace.
  • 2:50am — Two more rounds of voting.
  • 3:30-4:00am — Possible smoke signal. (Pope Benedict XIV elected in 2005)
  • 5:00am — Smoke signal expected. (Will be the fifth ballot)
  • 5:15am — Vespers in the Sistine Chapel.
  • 5:30am — Transfer to the Domus Sanctae Marthae.
  • 6:00am — Dinner.
  • Again, Cardinals sleep; we in the Eastern hemisphere, are awake.
  • 4:30pm — Breakfast.
  • And so the next “day” begins (see above) and so on… until Habemus Papam!

Pope John Paul II elected on the eighth ballot, John Paul I on the fourth, Pope Paul IV on the sixth.
